Hi James,

A good review of Bryston's history and audio philosophy.  Of course being a Bryston owner since 1979 I had heard most of it before but there were still a few new stories worth the time to listen.  Put simply in my opinion, Bryston offers superb engineering at a reasonable price and great long term support.

Hi James!

This was a very interesting and informative interview! I learned something new (which is always good!).

I was especially surprised to hear your DACs are an in-house design, by a gentleman named Dan (I didn’t catch his surname, sorry). You spoke of the first DAC designed by him. I would like to know which DAC that was – the BDA-1, some internal add-on DAC card for one of your earlier preamps or something third that I have never seen? I’d be very interested in learning what that first DAC actually was.

It’s interesting because your company was primarily known for analogue electronics (even though this changed somewhat in the last dozen years or so) which goes to show just how important the analogue section of a DAC really is!

Also, I didn’t realise you were 78! I’d never give you that many – you look way younger! Let’s face it, you are one cool dude! 😊 Here’s to many more birthdays, James!

Oh, no, don’t worry, I understood what you said in the interview. I just thought it was rather interesting and I wanted to know more about this first DAC designed by Bryston. Of course, by “DAC”, I don’t mean the actual D/A chip but rather the whole device. Can you tell me more please?

Hi James!

Oh, the BDA-1! Let me tell you, this very review was what lead me to eventually purchasing the BDA-2.

At the time, both were available and I decided to go ahead with the BDA-2 on account of its asynchronous USB input. I also did listening tests and comparisons to other excellent DACs, like the Musical Fidelity M6 and NAD M51. Even though both of these were superb, I appreciated the fully discrete output stage of the BDA-2 but also, I your company was able to build the DAC to-order so mine has no less than four RCA coaxial S/PDIF inputs! So not only is it a superb DAC, it's also unique! How cool is that?
