Infinity Kappa 8 speaker dspNexus 2x8 crossover
« on: 15 May 2024, 11:23 am »
A friend found a pair of Infinity Kappa 8 speakers that need the Polydome K's and 12in woofers rebuilt.  Picked them up awhile ago. Not going to complain for $80/pair. :)

These are the original version 4-way speaker with the bipole EMIT planar tweeters, Polydome K, Polygraph K dome and 12in woofer.

Found out that Millersound in PA does the rebuilds, so hope to be dropping them off this weekend.

Will post pictures of the process along the way of replacing the passive crossover with the DSP crossover from measurements.

Dropped off the two Polydome K midranges and two 12in woofers for repair at Millersound in PA last weekend.

Should be about 2 weeks for them to be repaired and shipped back.

Parts to mod the Kappa 8's are arriving.  Going to use Belden 1309A 14awg stranded cable to each driver that is already here.

Hope to hear about the Polydome K midrange and 12in woofer driver repairs by this weekend.

Some Parts-Express binding posts to add enough pairs for each driver in the speakers.

The Infinity Kappa 8 drivers being repaired will be shipped back on Monday.  Should be here in a few days from shipping.

Getting closer! :D

The Infinity Kappa 8 Polydomes and 12in woofers are back from repair at Millersound.

Now to see if the passive crossovers are still working with the drivers connected.

Will be rewiring the speaker drivers to binding posts to use with the DSP crossover and the passive crossover exterior to the original box.

Hi,

Thanks for the post. I remember way back really wanting to buy a pair of Infinity Kappa 6's after listening to them but my salary was so low I couldn't afford them :(.

Rod,
I understand.  Always thought they were cool looking, but never heard them

Will see what happens with this pair.  The non-polar electrolytics maybe not in great condition, so could be more going on than just the driver rebuilds.

Unpacked the repaired drivers for the Kappa 8 repair.

Wiring the drivers directly to a new terminal plate.

I remember those Kappa woofers from my stint when I was into car audio. They made really good car subs that actually sounded good.

You do some real cool stuff HAL and I enjoy your posts.

JCarney,

Thanks!

It is fun restoring vintage speakers and will be fun hearing the results with the EA dspNexus 2x8 with the upgraded AK4499EX DAC's.

Spent some of yesterday making two sets of 14awg stranded wiring for the direct drivers to binding post connections.  Then either the passive or DSP crossovers can be used with the speakers.

Waiting on a response to having a pair of connector plates made for the 5 pairs of binding posts needed for each speaker.   Use the original crossover mounting plates as a template for the replacement plate.

New wiring harnesses for all 5 drivers are complete and ready to be attached to the new connector plates once they arrive.  The plates are being custom cut from 3/16in polypropylene sheet material to have a low dielectric constant between the terminals.

Since these are sealed acoustic suspension boxes, also have gasket material coming to seal the new plates to the cabinets.

To make it an easy way to add connections to the Kappa 8's to connect to the external crossover, bought 2 Kappa 6 crossovers to use the plate for modification.

Will remove the original K6 parts and install the extra 5-way binding posts and reuse the original 5-way binding posts for direct connection to the individual drivers.

The Kappa 6 connector plates have the original crossover pc boards removed and ready to have the new 5-way connectors installed.

Started the repaired drivers install process.

The Polydome K is in a sealed chamber and the driver wiring is glued in.  Will install new fast-on connectors to use with the original wiring.  As I remove the Polygraph K and EMIT drivers will see how they are wired to the original passive crossover.

The Infinity Kappa 8 Polydome K repaired and being reinstalled in the baffle.  Wiring reworked with the original wiring as it is glued into the sealed cavity behind the driver.

No problem as there is excess wiring for repairs to be done.

Hi Hal,

I hope your well. You haven't updated this post in quite a while so I am just wondering if you finished restoring these speakers or if they are still an ongoing project?

Cheers Rod

Rod,
The parts are all here to rebuild the Kappa 8's.  Wiring harnesses are built, but since I found the 3in Polydome K is in a sealed tube with the wiring glued in, I have to make some decision on how to proceed.  Also remove the passive crossover and build a connector plate from the reclaimed Kappa 6 crossovers to replace the originals.

It is still happening, but the work room/listening area is in use for awhile.  There are 4 other speakers undergoing the DSP crossover work.

Two of them probably going to CAF2024 in November and one with the ABC Switch.
