What a great movie! As sequels go this one was far better than any that came after the original. I thought it slowed down a little too much between the action sections but my friend didn't so I guess the pacing was close to perfect with a satisfying ending. And the trilobites thought humans were very hugable but they are still a little too clingy to have as a pet.

I liked the subtle 3-D, it was closer to life-like than a movie like House of Wax. The Cinemark XD was excellent and highly recommended for this film. The sound was the best I have heard in a theater with clear, easy to understand dialog and no cringing during the loud action parts.

"Cinemark has completely remodeled and transformed one auditorium at each Cinemark XD theatre location into a state-of-the-art cinema experience. The Cinemark XD entertainment environment features an oversize, wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor screen, brand new plush seating, a custom JBL sound system featuring crisp, clear digital sound, and the brightest digital images delivered by a Doremi server and a Barco digital projector."

The total experience of a well done summer action movie, 3-D, and excellent sound was well worth the price of admission.

I found a fun website with more info about the engineers, trilibites, and xenomorphs.
Here is a link about the engineers to get you started: http://avp.wikia.com/wiki/Engineer
Caution: There are some spoilers in the character descriptions.

I'm somewhere in between. I thought it was visually fantastic and thought it was directed very well, but the script is by far the lowest point of Prometheus. It being picked up, and then chopped up, and then handed to the writer from Lost probably had a lot to do with it. There's interviews where Scott said they were banking on a sequel, so many things in my opinion were half-asses thrown in there and weren't fully thought through.

In my opinion, you'll enjoy the film more if you go into it expecting a standalone film. This isn't a direct prequel to Alien. It just happens in the same universe as Alien and the film has it's own story and questions. If there's a sequel, it will branch even further into it's own ideas and questions.

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit and might see it again with some other friends, but there's definitely moments where you can see the script falling apart. A lot of people say it wasn't a bad film, but a much better film was hidden within but wasn't focused on. I tend to agree.

Agree 100%

It is worth seeing for the visual effects and production design which are surely ground-breaking. I would expect no less from Ridley Scott. Sadly, your other points are right on IMO: Ridley's biggest weakness is a complete tone-deafness to a script. He cannot fix a weak story for his life. Almost all of his films share this quality, with Alien and Thelma and Louise being exceptions. Prometheus reminded me of Kingdom of Heaven in that both come so close, soo close to greatness but for ridiculously weak script - or editing, perhaps, in terms of keeping to the main story. Frustrating because everything is so awesome. I keep wanting to pop KOH into my player but then I remember how weak it is and I don't bother, like I keep hoping I will have a change of heart. Prometheus will be the same way.

Don't get me started on Mr. Lost screenwriter. Yeah, Prometheus raises lots of questions and, just like Lost, abandons them. No way do I care about the 'answers', because I know there aren't any. Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice...

Lastly the biggest bummer about Prometheus that had me scratching my head was the total lack of a 'team' that the other Alien films had, and which is crucial to the tension. Instead we had several different story lines and people to follow that didn't mesh - Three major plot events occur that only a few people witness at different times and none of those people ever manage to share what happened to anyone else or between each other. Very, very weird.

I do think Fassbender was amazing. But having seen him in Shame and X-men First Class helps to appreciate how good his performance was. The T.E Lawrence aspect was also interesting, but wha?

Idris is the new Sam Jackson. Stick in a movie because he's 'cool' and don't really give him anything to do but be a cool dude and say you worked on a movie with this really cool dude.

Charlize was terrific, but her role was wasted.

It's still worth seeing, and absolutely on the big screen and in 3-D (it was shot in 3D, which makes all the difference). So much potential. This movie deserves a phantom edit.

Yep, pretty much sums it up for me. I do hear there was about 30m cut from the theatrical release, and that it may be extended when it comes out on Blu-ray. While it may fill in some nice details, there's no fixing the sloppy and messy all over the place script.

bingo

Noomi was stunning, yes Charlize was wasted

I caught it in IMAX 3D last Friday -  my wife asked me if I'd recommend it, and I had to say "if you like that sorta thing" -  I'd probably have much preferred Avatar in this format

and why are the trailers so EFFEN loud? - in this case it was for the latest (conclusion)  Dark Knight episode  (does look like a helluva ride)

I should have taken my SPL meter or even iPhone just for curiosity sake,  but I'd be surprised if it didn't average over 100dB

rethinking this a bit (not so much the 3 stars for the film itself as the venue) - as it so happens this was showing at 2 separate big-azz 3D venues in town - the aforementioned IMAX (could it be that a 5:00PM showing with less than 20 heads in seats could account in part for overblown audio presentation ?)
and Odeon Cineplex UltraAVX3D (now there's a mouthful    )  - maybe for my next 3D pick I should try the latter

Well, it wasn't in 3D but I just got from watching it.  Personally I thought it was terrific, better than any of the Alien films (which were overrated IMOHO).  If they add in some extra material on BR is may be even better but I was satisfied with it, as is.  I liked the way serves as a metaphor for the great flood in the JC bible.

 Excellent!

I'm quite surprised by the polarized opinions. There is no doubt it's an excellent film and any possible discrepancies between this an the Alien film can obviously be filled with the (planned, if not yet greenlit) Prometheus sequel. I think as time passes, in hindsite this film will garner due respect.

 It was good! wasn't it?

how many sequels to a prequel before the director and certainly the audience lose track or interest?  :thumb:

Star Wars anyone?
